“I swear I’m going to kill her for doing this to you,” Zack said angrily.

CJ looked up from the sandwich she had been listlessly pulling apart and gave him a small smile.

“Thanks Zack, but it’s not her fault though. There was just too much at stake for her,” she said sadly.

“That’s still not a good reason to break up with someone you claim to love. She’s a coward.”

“Leave her alone okay,” she said angrily pushing her tray away from her.

“You should eat a bite of it. You can’t just starve yourself all day.” Sharon interjected.

“Yeah, shouldn’t you be eating your pain with a ton of junk food?” Zack asked teasingly.

“That only works in movies. I’m not hungry,” CJ replied quietly.

Sharon and Zack discussed ways to force her to eat while she tuned them out and continued shredding the rest of her lunch.

She felt Zoe’s presence before she spotted her. She passed close enough to CJ that she could smell the familiar scent of her shampoo. It was only after Zoe had left the lunchroom and she could breathe again that she saw the tiny note Zoe had slipped her.
